Libutti et al. (1998) proposed three prognostic factors that could predict metastatic disease in patients with VHLD – (1) tumour size >3 cm, (2) presence of a mutation in exon 3, (3) tumour doubling time <500 days. If none of the above criteria is met, the patient is classified as having a low risk for metastatic disease and kept on clinical and imaging surveillance, once every 2–3 years. If one of the criteria is met, clinical and imaging follow-up should be suggested once or twice in a year. If two or all the criteria are met, surgical intervention should be recommended.
